(155) ˹Damned they were[1059]˺ Because of their reneging on their pledge, Denying Allah’s Signs, killing the Prophets unjustifiably[1060] and saying: “Our hearts are encrusted”[1061], nay but Allah sealed them because of their Denial—little do they Believe. info

[1059] Cf. 2: 88, al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr.
[1060] Cf. note on 2: 21.
[1061] Cf. 2: 88.

(156) ˹And˺ Because of their Denial, their grossly vile slander against Maryam ˹Mary˺[1062]; info

(157) and their saying ˹boastfully˺: “We have killed the Messiah, ʿĪsā ˹Jesus˺, son of Maryam, the Messenger of Allah”, they neither killed him nor did they crucify him, but it was only made to appear like so to them[1063]. Indeed those who differed regarding him are ˹extremely˺ doubtful about him; they have no ˹real˺ knowledge about him; they are only following guesses. Certainly they did not kill him, info

[1063] One interpretation of shubbih lahum (He/it was only made to appear like so to them) is that another person was made to assume his likeness, so they mistook him for Jesus (عليه السلام) (cf. al-Wāḥidī, al-Wajīz, al-Qurṭubī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī, al-Shinqīṭī).

(158) but Allah raised him up unto Himself[1064]—indeed Allah is Most Prevailing, All-Wise. info

[1064] He ascended to Heaven (cf. 3: 55; al-Ṭabarī, Ibn ʿĀshūr).

(159) ˹Yet˺ Everyone of the People of the Book, none excepted, will absolutely Believe in him ˹Jesus˺ before his death[1065], and on the Day of Judgement, he ˹Jesus˺ will be a witness against them. info

[1065] The prevalent interpretation of this is that all the People of the Book, even the Jews, will come to Believe in Jesus’ Messengership, his neither being ‘an impostor’ nor ‘the son of God’, when he descends to Earth from Heaven at the end of time (cf. al-Bukhārī: 3448; Muslim: 155; al-Ṭabarī; Ibn Kathīr).

160 : 4

(160) Because of the wrongdoing of the Jews, We have made unlawful for them good ˹provisions˺ that had been made lawful to them[1066], and because of their frequently repeated turning ˹many˺ away from the path of Allah[1067]. info

[1066] For more details cf. 6: 146.
[1067] They never spared any effort in driving people away from the path of God: lying about God, distorting and concealing parts of the Scriptures and Denying Prophets Jesus and Muhammad (q). (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)

(161) And ˹because of ˺ their taking usury when they were forbidden from it, and their devouring people’s money wrongfully—indeed We have prepared for the Deniers among them ˹an ever present˺ painful Punishment. info

162 : 4

(162) But those who are firm in knowledge among them[1068] and the Believers Believe in what was sent down to you ˹Muhammad˺ and what was sent down before you; and those who ˹dutifully˺ keep up Prayers, give out the prescribed alms[1069], and are ˹sincere˺ Believers in Allah and the Last Day; those We will grant them a great reward. info

[1068] Not all the Jews were the same but the godly among their learned are excluded as per this aya. Their true knowledge led them to be among the ranks of Believers who Believed in the Prophet’s (ﷺ) Messengership and those of all the Messengers that preceded him and all of the Holy Scriptures (cf. al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī, Ibn ʿUthaymīn).
[1069] Keeping up Prayers (iqāmat al-ṣalāh) and giving out prescribed alms (ītā’ al-zakāh) are observable manifestations of one’s Belief. In contrast to the hypocrites who rise up to Prayers sluggishly (cf. 4: 142 above), sincere Believers do so willingly, devoutly and without delay.
