وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُواْ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَآ أَلۡفَيۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَآۚ أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَآؤُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡقِلُونَ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا يَهۡتَدُونَ

(170) Should they be told: “Follow what Allah sent down”[266], they would say: “Nay, we would only follow that which we found our fathers doing”[267]; ˹Would they˺ Even if their fathers were mindless of everything, nor were they guided? info

وَمَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِي يَنۡعِقُ بِمَا لَا يَسۡمَعُ إِلَّا دُعَآءٗ وَنِدَآءٗۚ صُمُّۢ بُكۡمٌ عُمۡيٞ فَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡقِلُونَ

(171) The similitude of those who Deny is that of one who howls at that which does not hear anything except the calling and yelling[268]—dumb, deaf, blind, they have no sense[269]. info

[268] Like mindless animals that do not discern what is being said to them. They only recognize shouting and yelling voices—they hear but do not listen.
[269] Their senses are not tuned to Divine admonition.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ كُلُواْ مِن طَيِّبَٰتِ مَا رَزَقۡنَٰكُمۡ وَٱشۡكُرُواْ لِلَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ إِيَّاهُ تَعۡبُدُونَ

(172) O Believers, eat of the good things[270] which We provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if you indeed worship Him ˹alone˺. info

[270] Ṭayyibāt, healthy and wholesome (cf. 5: 87-88 and 23: 51).

إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَيۡتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحۡمَ ٱلۡخِنزِيرِ وَمَآ أُهِلَّ بِهِۦ لِغَيۡرِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَمَنِ ٱضۡطُرَّ غَيۡرَ بَاغٖ وَلَا عَادٖ فَلَآ إِثۡمَ عَلَيۡهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٌ

(173) Indeed He ˹Allah˺ made unlawful for you carrion, blood[271], swine flesh, and what was intended ˹as sacrifice˺ for others besides Allah; ˹yet˺ whoever is forced ˹by necessity˺ – neither transgressing[272] nor going to excess[273] – he is not guilty of sin—certainly Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. info

[271] What is unlawful is flowing blood but not the blood captured in vessels after slaughter, cf. 6: 145. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī, Ibn ʿĀshūr, al-Shinqīṭī)
[272] By eating any of these without being in such a circumstance where one is hard pressed into it (cf. al-Ṭabarī, al-Saʿdī).
[273] Even in pressing circumstances, eating more than what is absolutely necessary (cf. al-Ṭabarī, al-Saʿdī).

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَكۡتُمُونَ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَيَشۡتَرُونَ بِهِۦ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلًا أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ مَا يَأۡكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمۡ إِلَّا ٱلنَّارَ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ وَلَا يُزَكِّيهِمۡ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

(174) Indeed those who suppress what Allah sent down in the Book and trade it off for a meagre price, these eat nothing but fire in their bellies; and on the Day of Resurrection Allah will not speak to them, nor will He purify[274] them—theirs is a painful Punishment. info

[274] Absolve them of their sins.

175 : 2

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشۡتَرَوُاْ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡعَذَابَ بِٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ فَمَآ أَصۡبَرَهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ

(175) Those are the ones who traded off guidance for loss, and Punishment for Forgiveness—incredulous is their endurance in the Fire![275] info

[275] God is mocking their ignorance of the severe Punishment that awaits them in the Hereafter when they will only experience the most excoriating pain and sufferance (cf. al-Ṭabarī, al-Wāḥidī, Ibn ʿAṭiyyah).

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ نَزَّلَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخۡتَلَفُواْ فِي ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ لَفِي شِقَاقِۭ بَعِيدٖ

(176) That is because Allah sent down the Book with Truth, and those who differ upon the Book are in extreme disagreement[276]. info

[276] With the Truth. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
