38 : 2

قُلۡنَا ٱهۡبِطُواْ مِنۡهَا جَمِيعٗاۖ فَإِمَّا يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدٗى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

(38) We said[70]: “Go down all of you[71], whenever guidance comes to you from Me whoever follows it will have neither fear nor will they grieve. info

[70] What follows is the original covenant: to follow the path of guidance shown to them by God’s Messengers. Those who Believe in the Message will lead a life of felicity but those who Deny will meet Hellfire as their final destination.
[71] The addressees were Adam, Eve and Satan. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn ʿAṭiyyah, Ibn Kathīr)

39 : 2

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

(39) As for those who Deny and disbelieve in our Signs these are the company of the Fire; forever they will abide therein[72]. info

[72] The episode of Adam’s creation and his encounter with Satan are spelled out in detail in 20:116-123.

40 : 2

يَٰبَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱذۡكُرُواْ نِعۡمَتِيَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَنۡعَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَأَوۡفُواْ بِعَهۡدِيٓ أُوفِ بِعَهۡدِكُمۡ وَإِيَّٰيَ فَٱرۡهَبُونِ

(40) Children of Israel![73] Remember My favour which I conferred on you, and fulfil ˹your obligations to˺ My pledge and I will honour ˹My obligations to˺ your pledge[74]; and fear none but Me. info

[73] Israel is Prophet Jacob (عليه السلام). The use of the epithet ‘Children of Israel’ for the Israelites is meant to act as a reminder to them to follow in the footsteps of the Patriarch from whom they are directly descended.
[74] God’s pledge to the Children of Israel and theirs to Him are given in 5: 12. This mutual pledge is related as: if the Children of Israel keep up the Prayer, give charity, Believe in and support the Prophets, and spend in the cause of God, God will, in return, expiate their sins and admit them to the Gardens through which rivers flow, i.e. Paradise.

وَءَامِنُواْ بِمَآ أَنزَلۡتُ مُصَدِّقٗا لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ وَلَا تَكُونُوٓاْ أَوَّلَ كَافِرِۭ بِهِۦۖ وَلَا تَشۡتَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِي ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا وَإِيَّٰيَ فَٱتَّقُونِ

(41) Believe in what I have sent down confirming what you have[75], do not be the first to Deny it, do not trade my Signs[76] for a pittance[77] and be Mindful of Me, info

[75] God is inviting the Children of Israel to Believe in the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) Message in fulfilment of their pledge to Him (cf. 7: 156-157, in which the Children of Israel are enjoined to Believe in the gentile Prophet whom they find mentioned in the Torah). (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
[76] The Torah in which there is mention of the Messengership of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
[77] Their leaders used to reap shares from their devoted folk’s wealth. Hence, they tried to hide the Truth about Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) fearing that they would lose these gratuities.

42 : 2

وَلَا تَلۡبِسُواْ ٱلۡحَقَّ بِٱلۡبَٰطِلِ وَتَكۡتُمُواْ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَأَنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ

(42) do not mix up Truth with falsehood, and do not suppress the Truth while you are aware of it, info

43 : 2

وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱرۡكَعُواْ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ

(43) keep up the Prayer, give out the prescribed alms and bow down ˹in Prayer˺ with those who bow down[78]. info

[78] This is an invitation from God to the Children of Israel to join the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions and become Believers performing acts of worship accordingly (al-Ṭabarī, al-Wāḥidī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī, Ibn ʿĀshūr). Furthermore, al-Wāḥidī is of the opinion that the command to “bow down with those who bow down” is specifically mentioned to denote performing congregational, obligatory Prayers.

۞ أَتَأۡمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَتَنسَوۡنَ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ تَتۡلُونَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ

(44) How could you enjoin people to do what is right and forget ˹about it˺ yourselves, while you read the Book[79]; have you no sense? info

[79] The Torah.

45 : 2

وَٱسۡتَعِينُواْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلۡخَٰشِعِينَ

(45) Seek help in patience and Prayer[80]; indeed they are hard save for the dedicated[81]. info

[80] The commentary widely-known as al-Jalālayn has it that this command is addressed to: “The Children of Israel who were hampered from Belief out of greed and love of vainglory. They are commanded to seek help in patience, i.e. fasting, which dents wantonness, and Prayer because it leads to humbleness and expels haughtiness”.
[81] The ‘dedicated’ (al-khāshiʿīn) are those who are humble in obedience to God, fearful of His Punishment, Believing in His promise and warning. (al-Ṭabarī)

46 : 2

ٱلَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَٰقُواْ رَبِّهِمۡ وَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَيۡهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

(46) Those who firmly Believe that they will be meeting their Lord and that they are returning to Him. info

47 : 2

يَٰبَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱذۡكُرُواْ نِعۡمَتِيَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَنۡعَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَأَنِّي فَضَّلۡتُكُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

(47) Children of Israel! Remember My favour which I conferred on you and that I privileged you over other peoples[82]. info

[82] In their time, God gave them certain privileges over other peoples; Prophets, revealed Books and kingship (cf. 5: 20). (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr)

48 : 2

وَٱتَّقُواْ يَوۡمٗا لَّا تَجۡزِي نَفۡسٌ عَن نَّفۡسٖ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا يُقۡبَلُ مِنۡهَا شَفَٰعَةٞ وَلَا يُؤۡخَذُ مِنۡهَا عَدۡلٞ وَلَا هُمۡ يُنصَرُونَ

(48) Be cautious of a Day[83] on which no soul will be of use to another soul, neither intercession[84] nor ransom will be accepted from it, and they[85] will not be helped. info

[83] The Day of Judgement.
[84] On the Day of Judgement no intercession on behalf of a Denier will be accepted, but it will be accepted for a Believer given that God permits it. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
[85] The Deniers.
