[1686] Ibn Kathīr and Ibn ʿAṭiyyah are of the opinion that Shuʿayb’s people were engaged in highway robberies (cf. also al-Shawkānī, al-Wāḥidī); along with turning away those who sought out Shuʿayb so they could listen to him (cf. al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī).
