[138] The Qur’an uses the unqualified ḥayāt, life, to emphasize their keenness on being alive and their aversion to death, irrespective of the quality of the life that they are so eager to lead (cf. al-Tawḥīḍī, Ibn ʿĀshūr).
[139] Although they are told of life after death and what awaits the real servants of God in their Scriptures, they are keener on living longer in this life than even those who do not Believe in the Hereafter, i.e. al-Mushrikīn, those who Associate other deities in worship of God, i.e. the idolaters who were not privileged with a revealed Scripture).
